| One-half block from the facility. This "hip" yet "refined" Midtowner is a "nice change of pace from the big guys", with "cool", "modern" ambiance, "good service" and rooms that may be "tiny" but have "great decor" and "lovely linens"; add free continental breakfast and this "small gem" shines as a "total class act" and real "deal". | |||

| Around the corner from the facility. "All the opulence you'll ever want," from luxurious rooms with many amenities," to "unbelievably good: service (a butler on every floor)" makes this 1904 beaux arts belle the "ne plus ultra" of hotels for many (it's NYC's No. 2 overall best); "catering to the fastidiously rich as opposed to the filthy rich", it is, alas, "wildly expensive, but must be done at least once”. | |||

| Two blocks from the facility. "Fit for a king" proclaim partisans of this all-suiter that's "excellent for business or pleasure" with an "ideal" Midtown location "in walking distance of theatres"; quarters are "large" and "lovely", and other regal touches include "the world's best bathrooms", a 24-hour gym, fine American fare at Halcyon and a "power scene at the bar"; a few quibble with the "small lobby" and "uneven" service, but overall, it's "a winner". | |||

| Across Fifth Avenue from the facility. "Elegance and comfort personified" say admirers of this "absolutely grand" beaux arts, landmark built in 1905: "posh" rooms and "pampering service" are complemented by a "super rooftop bar", "wonderful dining' at Adrienne and a top floor spa and health club that "make even the lazy want to work out" while gazing at the spires of St. Pat's; it may be very expensive", but it's "worth every penny". | |||

| One block west of the facility. As you'd expect from its size, service can vary from "efficient" to "abrasive" and the lobby can resemble "baggage claim at La Guardia"; for best results, "splurge" for a suite in the Towers, a calmer hotel-within-a hotel. | |||
| THE GORHAM | |||
| 136 West 55th Street between 6th & 7th Avenues |
RATES: Moderate | 212-245-1800 212-582-8332 (Fax) |
ROOMS: 69 |
| Two blocks west of the facility. With it's charming European style and incredibly convenient location near the Theatre District, 57th Street theme restaurants and MoMA, this "small", older hotel is worth "recommending for the money"; recently renovated, it now has kitchenettes in all it's "efficient" rooms, and non-cooks can opt for the onsite Italian favorite Castellano or tackle a gargantuan sandwich at the nearby Carnegie Deli. | |||
